Husband (Amjad Khan) leaves his wife (Nirupa Roy) with two children. Still she hopes him to come back and accept her and she waits for that day. The title of the film throws light only on the above fact. But the film is about Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor who are the sons of Amjad and Nirupa Roy separated in childhood in a mishap. They come together after years dramatically and awaken their father Amjad Khan to accept their beloved mother. Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) is a street smart "tapori" beating toughies and gangsters at various occasions, helps all those who have been cornered. He is also social worker and collects money for the festivals using a kolhapuri chappal. He also dances in festivals singing songs with Rekha, his lover. Ravi (Shashi Kapoor) is a police inspector living with his mother (Nirupa Roy), and is in love with Parveen Babi.
