Somewhere near the countryside of Assam loives a rich man who is known as Sardar Rajpal of Suna Nagar. He has with him an adopted daughter named Meena. In reality, Sardar Rajpal is Gopal, who twenty years ago killed his friend, Amarnath, in a fit of temper and immediately took to his heels, leaving behind his young wife Kamla and two months old son, Shanker. Now, after a lapse of twenty years, Gopal feels himself safe to meet his wife and son and gives an advertisement in a newspaper which would give a clue of his whereabouts to his wife. He also inserts another advertisement seeking the services of a young man-who can look after his property. By chance, Kamla happens to read both the advertisements and sends her son Shanker to meet his father, with a letter of introduction in which she asks Gopal to keep Shanker in service till she returns from a pilgrimage. She also cautions Gopal not to reveal his identity to his son, as Shanker has come to hate his father for forsaking him and his mother, Vishnu, Amarnath s younger brother also comes across the same advertisments and learns that Gopal is still alive. While he is about to inform the police about Gopal s identity, his son Sohan suggests their tkaing vengence in a different manner. He believes that both Kamla and Shanker are dead and plans to approach Gopal, posing as his son Shanker, to inherit his property. Shanker starts on his journey to try his luck with Rajpal and happens to meet Meena who is returning home after a short visit to the city. They both travel together without knowing each other s identity or destination and due to the pranks played by Shanker, Meena gets annoyed and forms a bad opinion about him...watch this classic to see what happens next!
