There was a time when everyone in the Indian joint family considered ‘chhayageet’ as a blessing in disguise. And everyone used to be glued to their TV sets on Thursdays to watch it. During the 1980s, the idiot box content ruled majority of households as people didn’t have any other source of entertainment. In India, content didn’t evolve much during that time as many broadcasters were fearful of showcasing something that would make the audience lose their interest.

But revolution had to begin somewhere as content providers realized the need for change. Therefore, the content on TV started being more constructive, which gave room to new movies and TV shows that showcased content that the audience could relate it. Even film-makers understood that if they want the audience to keep coming in theatres, they need to spice up the content and the same bland movie story can’t be on loop. With a new storyline and strong character based movies, people got engulfed by movies that sometime displayed true stories or fictional ones. Although, the demand for TV movie or multiplex movies are still prevalent, there is a rise in interest in digital cinema. It is quite simple that the internet gives everyone the access to view worldwide content.

Truly, it is the age of the internet, everyone up to a major extent depends on the internet. If you want to shop, if you want to watch movies or TV shows or simply book movie tickets or an airline ticket, the digital platform covers it all for you. Infact, nowadays, people are hooked onto the internet and prefer watching movies and TV shows at home comfortably, rather than going to a theatre, which proves to be a costly affair. Platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime are proving to be a good boon by the gods of the internet as they allow users to stream movies and TV shows with the help of a minor subscription fee. Therefore, there is a decline in viewership as far as TV and theatres are concerned. No one can beat Netflix’s original content of movies and TV shows. Apart from being innovative and creative, they have strong content that attracts the viewers to watch more. And as far Amazon Prime is concerned, they have played their smart card pretty well as they showcase recently released movies, after a month from the release of the movie in theatres. Therefore, instead of spending money on expensive movie tickets, people are playing the waiting game.

The digital cinema services that Netflix offers is very interesting as they only broadcast original content for which they own the rights. Even film-makers and production houses have realized the power of video on demand services and have opted out to showcase their content in theatres or TV as it turns out that these SVOD platforms have much scope in the present and in the future. There are plenty lot who have forgotten that they have a TV and prefer to watch media related content on their smartphones, laptops and PCs. The digital platform is certainly making its presence felt globally as many people are choosing subscription for SVOD services as they feel the content broadcasted is rich, fresh and meaty.

The conclusion is very clear and it is in favor of the digital platform. The present and the future will be dominated by digital platforms while old and traditional methods will be tagged as extinct dinosaurs. The truth of the matter is that media platforms relying on the internet to deliver content is the best way to reach to an audience that is hungry for rich content.
