In the past, the only source of entertainment for everyone was just the television. And everything from movies to TV shows to events, everything was broadcasted on TV. But as many years passed, there was a sort of a revolution with the internet coming into play. There was a new friendship developing between the viewers and the internet that gave space to video on demand platforms. Satellite TV got severe competition as VOD platforms started dominating the market. The coming of Netflix in India was certainly a blessing in disguise as the TV audience needed a change from all the saas-bahu sagas and repeated telecast of movies.

Netflix offered much more to the viewers in terms of content, from international hit TV shows to original movies tailored for Netflix alone and a wide range of documentaries. Such mouth-watering content, the audience had to be wooed. VOD services opened doors for alternative entertainment, thus making the audience very happy.  However, Netflix thought it would rule the content market, but many other players such as Voot and Amazon Prime followed in. The trend to watch movies, TV shows or any other genre started to catch up with the audience.

A large section of producers saw VOD platforms has an amazing opportunity to give their content a new life, a new audience and a new beginning. This step certainly proved to be a fruitful one. Even VOD service providers began to buy VOD rights from new-age film producers, who were eager to do something new. The audience too is very happy because, firstly they pay an annual subscription fees which is very low and secondly, authentic content that can be seen from the comfort of their home. Therefore, VOD streaming platforms are rapidly making waves.

There are other VOD platforms that don’t charge a yearly subscription fee, but have free content and paid content formats. Even the audience is happy with the package. But, the best deal for the audience is original content without censorship. TV has certain rules and regulations that need to be followed and censorship comes along with the package, but with VOD platforms censorship is long gone. Therefore you as an audience get to see international content of movies and TV shows without any cuts. Even Indian movies that are visually explicit to a certain extent and carry a strong theme such as homosexuality or women-oriented cinema or a certain religious movie have found their homes in VOD platforms.

The trend of online web-series is catching up with the audience, with bold content finally finding acceptance with the Indian audience. Hence, producers who want to explore an unknown territory, approach VOD distributors to broadcast their content. Thus, it is a win-win situation for both the distributors as well as the producers.

Digital platforms have surely brought a transformation in content. And content has certainly proved it is king as wherever it goes, it makes a powerful impact. And in the near future, big banner Bollywood movies too can be released on VOD platforms. One thing is certain that the future of VOD is bright as the audience will grow by many a fold. The hunger to watch authentic content without any boundaries was a distant dream but now because of these digital platforms everything is possible. This also states a lot about consumer behavior and how things need to evolve in order to keep the audience glued. And online streaming service providers have understood that if they want to be in the game, they have to spell out innovation and creativity.

Clearly after the emergence of VOD platforms, things have become good as VOD platforms come with numerous benefits and the audience just can’t get enough of it.
